C Crane CCRadio-SW (Model CSW-TCF) Review

I've been a fan of the original CC Radio Plus for a few years... but now the latest addition to the family is rising up the ranks.

The CC Radio SW, adding shortwave but removing the TV & Weather band, is as good (or better) than its CC-cousin. With many of the same features, incl., lighted dial, alarm & snooze functions, as well as terrific AM reception...and excellent sound, it outperforms most portables of similar size.It has many of the same extras as the Grundig S250, incl., an AM RF Gain knob. Also, separate switches for local & distant AM reception, in addition to operating on 2 types of batteries!! Either 4 AA's or 4 'D size. When plugged-in to the AC adapter, it has the ability to charge the batteries. This of course is only useful if you're using rechargeable cells in the unit. I haven't had this long enough to give a comment on battery usage, although if the key-pad lights are used too often, that will help to drain them quicker. The tuning ability is excellent. The large knob is easy to control and the ability to switch between slow & fast tuning (plus locking it on a frequency) is a nice addition. Another plus; it's very lightweight, and the built in (pop up)handle makes for easy transport.

The only gripes I have is that the small function buttons are a bit difficult to decipher at first due to the tiny print, and I wish there was a way to "lock out" the backlight display when tuning stations, on battery-power... like there is on the original CC.

If you like the CC Radio... you'll like this. Or, if you already have a Grundig, or similar brand, you may want to try the CC Radio SW!

Weather Station, BAR618HGA/BLRS-E Review

This thing just works. I popped it out of the box and started using it immediately. The weather feature does work pretty well and accurately predicts clouds or sun with near perfection so far. The radio receiver locked in on WWV with no trouble and this happened in a matter of a few minutes of first opening it up and activating it. The remote transceiver works great and I'm happy with this purchase. Worth it for the price.

Only observation: It doesn't link to the PC like advertised, but honestly, I didn't mind. Frankly, I don't need yet another device that hooks to the PC and then requires me to support from OS version to version. It's great to still get devices that operate standalone and with no dependence on computers. I'm rather sick of having to download drivers for devices that frankly, should just work and be simple like this weather station!

Bottom Line? Get it - worth every penny.

JWIN PORT ATMIC ALRM CLK BLU BACK LIGHT LCD Review

This looked like a cool clock to get, as I wanted a projection clock that I did not have to manually set the time.I like the short design, but after receiving it, that is all I like about it. I don't know if I got the bad one from the batch, but most everything on this clock (model JL-708) did not work. Most disappointing was the projection was upsidown on the wall and I could only see the projection from 1 foot away. Though I could toggle the switch from AM to FM, the radio was stuck on AM. Equally disappointing was the Time zone setting did not work and I was unable to get it to work manually.Despite following the instructions, the clock never got a signal to the Satellite for the RCC (Radio controlled clock). The instruction manual contains elementary english language grammar mistakes. Now I have to pay the garbage collector to take it away.

Tranquil Moments White Noise Sound Machine for Baby Review

We have used this sound machine every night for 4 1/2 years. Our daughter can't sleep without it. We use it ourselves if one of us wants to take a nap while others are at home and awake. After all that use, the only physical problem we're having is sometimes we have to wiggle the AC adapter to make it work. No big deal really. The biggest problem with this sound machine is that if you turn the volume all the way up, it has that weird crackling sound that you get when a speaker is maxed out. That sound grates on my nerves. I don't turn it all the way up, but my husband and daughter do. The only sound we use now is the white noise. We experimented with all the other sounds when our daughter was a baby. Only the white noise sound is really effective at blocking out household noises, and only if it's all the way up. I definitely recommend a white noise machine for anybody who has trouble sleeping, just maybe not this one.

I purchased the NeatReceipts scanner in order to help me get organized in preparation of my 2011 federal taxes.Within days of ordering it, I learned the current gov't administration is no longer allowing sales tax to be a federal deduction!Oh well, I'm still planning to use it to help me get organized.

Overall, I would rate the device a solid 4 out of 5 stars.It is easy to get started, easy to use, and is helpful when converting paper receipts and other documents into electronic media.

My two critiques of the device:1. The feeding process is slower than I would like.Yes, I could have forked out an additional $200 dollars and got the desk version which is faster, but I did not want the bulk nor could I justify the additional $$.2. The accuracy of the data captured and summed on the spreadsheet data base is off around 50% of the time (depending on the quality of the receipt being scanned).Dates are often incorrectly captured, tax and total dollar amounts, and many times, the vendor data is not captured at all.

Digital AM/FM Table Top Radio - White Review

This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.

Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.

Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.

Hummer Multi - Bank Atomic Clock Review

Unless you like reading teeny numbers with poor contrast and the most complex alarm setting procedure ever, pass on this clock. While it worked fine, I gave up on it after a month of travel. I was never confident that it would wake me up the next day because i was never sure I set it right. It's a clock, not a toy. Make it simple for us simple minded folks.

Equity 25509 14-Inch Commercial Wall Clock Review

Serves its purpose. Noisy clicks when it ticks and obviously the construction of the piece is crap plastic for the most part but you are paying [...] for a decent looking wall clock. Not so great for a room where you demand quiet but we put this in our workout area where clicking goes unnoticed and the numbers are big and easy to make out from a distance. This sure is a clock.

Oregon Scientific WR113 Weather Radio with Temperature and Freeze Alarm Review

Bought the Oregon Scientific Weather Radio on their reputation as being a top notch innovative company.I have owned an older version of a weather radio 8 years ago and wanted to get a newer model that had better reception.Radio also came with AC adapter which is a selling point.

The Good:Ordered it from Amazon and got it in three days.Super fast.
Radio's yellow color is easy to locate in a hurry.Radio sensitivity was good.

The Bad:Radio is below par for Oregon Scientific.As read on other reviews of the WR103 (similar to WR113) on the net, the temperature reading is way off. Was reading 75 degrees when my digital thermostat read 68.Believe me, it was not 75 degrees.

Other problem right out of the box was that the received station cut out every ten seconds just as if it was programmed to do that.You could set your clock to the every ten seconds the audio cut out all you heard was hiss.Thought it was the station so I turned on the old radio and the signal was there all the time just as always.Called Oregon Scientific and could not get through in three days.Sent them an email and received a note that they would contact me within four(4) days.How many bad products could they now be selling that it takes customer service four days to return a call.They never got back to me.I returned it to Amazon and got a refund.

Oregon Scientific -Do away with that annoying beep every time you press a button.In the middle of the night, I don't want to be waking others with that obnoxious beeping.My older radio did not have that annoying function and it's temperature reading was accurate.

Don't know what to say about our American companies sending their products overseas for manufacturing and they have no quality control over them.

Small Portable AM/FM Shortwave Radio Review

Paid $39.98 at J & R Music World.Best in class.While this radio is not for the serious SW listener, it is just right for the international traveler who is concerned with space and reception.And, at this price point if it is lost or stolen you're only out $40.Sound on AM bands better than average...on FM also OK...does receive stereo with headphones...SW reception better than average, that is expected with a C Crane product...service also good, that too is expected with C Crane...size of the radio a bit large but OK...drawbacks....dial light a bit dim...and when you turn radio on with am band engaged you get a strange beep..but that's tolerable..overall, don't waste hundreds of dollars on a sony or grundig....most likely this C Crane radio will fill your needs at a very reasonable price point....I give it six stars

I thought this clock was beautiful and thought it would be a great addtion to our room filled with Alaskan items. The moment I opened the box however I noticed that the clock is made of cheap material. It is very light which may be a good thing but can knock off your wall quite easily. The dials for the time are also so poorly made that they can easily be bended. I accidentaly ran into this clock and it fell and ever since then the hands on the clock have never been straighten perfectly and so the time will be several hours off after I go and reset it. I am now wishing that I had gotten another clock. I dont even use it anymore, it is put away in storage and doubt I can sell it for what I bought it at. I would not reccomend this clock unless you plan on hanging it somewhere that is rarely visited.

Oregon Scientific Public Alert Weather Station Review

I've owned this device for a little over a year and during that time both the entire device and the remote sensor have been returned/replaced.Just to be clear that means that I'm on my THIRD remote sensor.An example of the problem I had was that it "predicted" rain for weeks on end.When I called tech support the fellow kept insisting that it was a prediction.I re-explained that I live in south central Kansas and it had been warm and sunny for weeks and he once again tried to convince me that the rain "prediction" would come true.I agreed by default.Needless to say today its precipitating a wintry mix (snow, sleet etc.) and has been for days.My weather station clearly says sun.It's bound to be a true prediction eventually.The NOAA weather receiver works perfectly, my regret is that I didn't just buy it separately and a separate weather station.

Battery for HP iPaq hx2495 - Super Extended Life Review

At first I was not so sure about the quality of the battery, but overall now I am quite convinced. It works perfectly and, indeed, it has a little more life than the original one, but it is not that different, hence only 4 stars. I would have liked that it lasted longer. I have a Hx 2495 and also a 2795 and it works well with both models. But there are some minor issues, at first the Ipaq does not refresh correctly the charge of the battery. It took me a few soft resets to get it right. Now it seems to work fine, although the charge from 98% to 100% could be tricky sometimes.

Electronic Wind Chime Clock Review

I gave this as a gift to my fiance exactly 6 months ago.Moved the clock to the mantle, and it wouldn't chime.The instructions are simple, I don't even need them to figure out the mere three buttons on the clock and the switch options are "On, Off, Auto [chime alarm], Alarm [beeping alarm]"I set up a chime alarm, it didn't go off.I turned the switch to "On" and the chimes still don't go off.The clock is still working, the chimes are not.What a shame.I give it two stars because at least the clock still works and the beeping alarm.

I ordered this from Avon 1/31/2007, so I cannot comment on the this company's customer service.

Crosley Corsair Radio - Purple (CR612-PR) Review

I loved the picture of this item...I had just the place to put it in my home where it would look great.It does look great.It just hardly works.The whole thing only weighs a pound or two...this should have clued me in right away when unpacking it.The switches have an imprecise and awful feel and seemvery delicate.The sound quality is very poor (Remember those less than $5 transistor radios?) and the reception is worse.Even the strongest stations in my area only come in with a great deal of fuzzy sound and you can always hear the radio stations near them in the back ground.I haven't bought anything electronic that was this bad in years.Don't be fooled by the good looks...in this case beauty really is only skin deep.

Wincraft Houston Astros Desk Clock Review

This is a very nice desk clock that is battery operated (two batteries included). The clock displays not only the time, but also the numerical month and day, but also the days' abbreviation and the temperature (celcius or fahrenheit). The area that has the teams logo displayed is actually a window (like a picture frame) where you can replace the team logo with your favorite photo. The baseball with the star logo is a vinyl type sticker and it is attached to the frame. HoMedics SoundSpa AM/FM Clock Radio Review

Unless you can sleep with bright lights, don't care about the correct time, and are not picky about the sound quality, I would NOT recommend this product. I contacted customer service because of the projection time showing differently than the main screen time and they were pretty prompt to reply but they said that it was a problem with MY electric! Who ever heard of that? They said that I would just have to unplug it whenever that happens and then plug it back in and reset the current time and alarm time. I've had this for about 6 months and I've had to reset it about 12 times. Quite ridiculous considering the amount that this product costs.

Pros:
Makes a good night light if you're someone who needs a brightly lit room.
I like that the numbers are blue instead of the normal red.

Cons:
Screen is too bright
Nature sounds sound unnatural (for example the waterfall sounds more like white noise.)
Nature sounds sound like a broken record (they are just a few seconds long and just play over and over again.)
Projection clock usually shows random numbers
Freezes up a lot where you have to unplug it to reset it.
Radio quality isn't that great.

Overall I would NOT recommend this product. I'm kicking myself for not taking this back to the store I bought it from while I still could. I thought HoMedics was a good brand but now I don't think I will ever purchase anything from them again.

40009 Insta-set 0.9" Led Clock Review

Every time the power is shut off and restored, the clock loses two minutes, you either mentally allow for that or reset the time. Either choice is hardly suitable for a clock that is supposed to be automatic. I live in an RV, so the power is cut every time we move, I needed a clock that could be read in the dark, LED, and was accurate, linked to the atomic clock. This is not it. Two stars for the LED.

American Innovative Roadshow Lecture Timer Review

One of the hardest things for me is staying within my time limits when speaking in front of my Toastmasters club. This little timer is exactly what I needed. It is easy to set up and use, and the visual indicators are easy to see. This should help me to keep within my time limits from now on. I was eager to see if the LED's were visible from 'behind' the timer. I wanted to know if this could be used by the time keeper at the club to show the time to the entire room. But the LED's are only visible from the front and from above the timer. So this will work great on the podium, but not for the entire room. Still... I love this clock and I'm going to recommend that my Toastmasters club buy their own.

Jwin Electronics JL-334 Stereo Am/fm Ala Review

This clock is very nice.I was a bit scared in purchasing it because there were no reviews listed and the Jwin brand doesn't exactly come to mind when I think of electronic greatness.But I decided to take a chance because I liked how good it looks and really wanted it.I am very pleased with my purchase.

The radio sounds exceptionally good...ummm, surprisingly good for a clock radio.When a station comes in it is extremely crisp and clear. No static.Tuning is a bit tricky.It is very sensitive and sometimes difficult to tune into the exact station number.The slighest turn of the tuning dial moves it quite a bit.For example, try as I might I couldn't land on 97.1 to save my life, but 97.3 comes in just fine so it doesn't matter.I like that only the time is displayed when the radio is off.

The best part about this clock is how good it looks. This is one of the sweetest looking clock radios I have seen on the market (which is why I bought it).One walk through Best Buy and Target left me scratching my head as to why clock radios have to be so darn ugly.Kudos to Jwin on this one!!The design is very sleek and the blue display is quite impressive to look at.It doesn't appear too bright as I have heard complained ofother blue displays--at least not too bright for me but then I admit I am not using this clock in my bedroom.Actually, given how large the display is, it probably would be too bright for a bedside clock.Not to mention, although I love the large display, I don't think I would like looking at it close-up from my bed.In a half-sleep haze I might roll over and mistake the large numbers for eyes looking at me.One swift kick and this clock would go flying.

Be forewarned that although the picture shows this clock with blue numbers on a black background, my clock came with blue numbers on a blue background.The blue background is also lit.Blue on blue is not as sharp to look at as blue on black would be, but it doesn't bother me at all.I like that the blue background glows too, but it may make for a brighter display than your average clock because the entire display, not just the numbers, will be glowing in the dark. And remember, this is an exceptionally large display.

This only issue I have with this clock is the viewing angle.You almost have to view this clock at eye level or lower.Otherwise the display will be illegible and distorted if you have to look up at it. I intended to put this clock on a bathroom shelf but I couldn't read the display.I think this is due to both the display background and the numbers being lit, and both being the same color.Not enough constrast for the numbers to stand out at odd angles.I will have to buy a different clock for my bathroom but will still keep this one because I really like it.I just might get another for the heck of it if the price keeps dropping like it is (it was $16 when I bought mine).

I do hate that it requires a 9 volt battery instead of the more common AA.Does anything require 9 volts anymore?!! I don't think I will be purchasing 9 volt batteries just for this clock.Thankfully, it isn't my bedroom alarm clock so I won't need a backup battery for it anyway.

Update 6/2/07:

I haven't been paying much attention but I do think this clock loses time after a while.It was running about 4 minutes slow and I just had to adjust the time.Perhaps this is due to a momentary power outage, as I have no back-up battery in place, but I doubt it.Up till now I hadn't paid much attention to this clock but I'll keep my eye on it now to see if it loses time again.

I really like the features available on this clock.It is a bit smaller than I anticipated.With small size comes small parts.The buttons are fine, if a little close together.The hardest part to work is the little switch on the side.When you think you have it in place, it actually isn't.The off setting is in the middle, so if you don't have it set just right, it will beep or vibrate at you.I keep in my desk drawer at work, so it sometimes goes off and startles me.

After my parents' alarm clock died, I got them this one as a Christmas present.I chose it for two features in particular: the large display and the adjustable light level.With both of my parents in their sixties, they need a clock that they can see easily from a distance.My father, also, needs to be able to set the clock to the lowest possible light level, because he has extremely acute night vision and most clock displays are too bright for him to sleep near.Having to cover up your clock to go to sleep really defeats its purpose, so this model is perfect.My parents also love that the clock has two alarms on it; they no longer need to each have their own clock because this one takes care of both of them.Westclox is a brand that I've always found reliable, so I knew it would be great.

La Crosse WS-8035U-IT Wireless 915mhz Forecast Station with Pressure Graph & In/Out Temps! Review

I'm a meteorologist.If I had it in my budget to get a professional weather station (like from Davis) for my home I would but until I do this station will serve nicely.

The display unit is nice and large, very easy to read.The base is narrow enough that I can set it on the kitchen window sill without worrying it will fall into the sink.The remote sensor is about 30-40 feet away, around the corner of the house.Our home has metal siding and the signal from the remote has to travel through two exterior walls and a window; we've had no reception problems.

The sensors are accurate.When I first put in the batteries (follow the instructions as another reviewer said) I let the outdoor sensor sit next to the indoor sensor for quite a while.The readings from the base unit and remote matched within 0.7 of a degree and 2% humidity.

The clock set itself within about an hour of putting in the batteries.

The base unit is easy to read and full of information.The unit records not only high and low temperature and humidity for both the indoor and outdoor sensors but also the date and time the reading was taken.If you were so inclined you could reset the measurements on 1 January, then on 31 December see when you had your highs and lows for the year.

I want to address a couple of comments by other reviewers.First, the specifications of the unit (found on page 23 of the manual downloadable from Amazon) clearly state the unit will only report outside temperatures to about -22F.Expecting La Crosse to do something about this is like buying a Geo Metro and complaining that you can't compete in NASCAR.The unit is not built for those extreme low temperatures.Don't buy it if it doesn't meet your needs.

Second, the Weather Channel reports measurements taken by a weather station (often at an airport or NWS office) that is in your cable viewing area.The Weather Channel is not reporting conditions in your backyard.Official measurments are taken using instruments housed in a shelter built to certain specifications, usually 4-6 feet off the ground.I've got my outdoor sensor stuck to the side of the house about 8-9 feet up.It's good enough for backyard meteorology but it's definitely doesn't meet requirements for official measurements.

Third, the reason the pressure tendency chart blinks (actually it's displayed in a scrolling fashion) is "to avoid burnout of the LCD".Manual, page 18, section I9.

Remember, the pressure displayed is station pressure.The values reported by the Weather Channel are converted to sea level pressure.Station pressure is affected by the height of the weather station; the higher you're located above sea level the lower the pressure displayed, compared to sea level pressure.Fortunately it's not the number that matters.What you're interested in as a weather watcher is the pressure tendency.If the pressure is dropping then look for worsening weather; likewise with increasing pressure you can expect conditions to improve.

All in all this is a nice package with many features found only on more expensive units.

The unit is still going strong after a year, though the outside sensor died.It fell off the side of the house a couple of times - it's possible that had something to do with it.Fortunately the replacement sensor is only $15 here on Amazon, though it doesn't come with a weather shield.I have it under an eave, but I still may seal the new sensor (La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor) with silicon as a precaution.

I didn't realize how much I looked at the thing until the sensor died...I'm going through data withdrawal now.

Interestingly, the unit is now branded as "The Weather Channel" wireless weather station.When I bought this it was just a regular old wireless weather station.Perhaps TWC branding is the reason the price has gone up since last year.

WESTCLOX TOUCHSCREEN QTZ ALARM Review

I was replacing this same model purchased about 5 years ago. This model is ultra sensitive, and the alarm turns off if you hit anywhere on the right side of the touch screen. Alarm is of a good pitch and volume, snooze twice allowed for additional 20 minutes. Great for travel and areas with extreme weather during black outs. Screen easy to read, lights up when touched.
